MakING your home safe and functional for years to come

Why can’t I just hire a contractor and be done?

You can! Most contractors want to jump to using ADA recommendations, which was intended for commercial use, meaning “one size fits all.” Another thing to consider is progression of illness and age. Will the renovation be long-term or will you need another renovation when circumstances change? As an occupational therapist, I look at the individual’s needs and make recommendations based on the person so you only have to go through the process once.

WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT YOU?

Right now!!! Just kidding…. (or am I!?!?!) Ideally, if you are building, contact me before picking out a floor plan. I can ensure your floor plan accommodates your needs. Already have a floor plan and construction is underway? No biggie! I can help with the finishing touches. If you are renovating, you can reach out at any time, however if you are moving walls, then the sooner the better. I want to make sure that when your renovation is completed, it functions exactly how you imagined.

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN?

Universal design is when a product is designed to fit a one size fits all without regard for age, ability, and mobility. It is meant for all abilities, which can be great when looking for the generalized solution (think commercial bathrooms). An example of universal design is an adjustable mirror in the bathroom so people of all heights can use it. However, when an individual has specific needs, using universal design is not always helpful. Having someone who understands individual factors will decrease the need to make additional changes down the road. Think of it as “measure twice, cut once.”

Are you covered under insurance?

As a medical provider, I am responsible for billing Medicare for services rendered. I also want to mention that our services are an investment in your ability to optimize your living at home, and can provide huge savings when considering the monthly costs for long term care and/or caregiver assistance hours.

how do i know what i need? i don’t know anything about renovations.

After we speak with you, we can schedule a consultation at your home and develop an initial plan. What you need is based on your goals to help you do things that are important to you--maybe even activities that you have not been able to do, including if there is any uncertainty--the question is ---can what you want or need to do in your home be done easier? This is the question that we would be able to answer with you, whether it is for yourself or a family member/caregiver.

what exactly is an occupational therapist?

Simply put, an occupational therapist is someone with extensive training across the lifespan who help individuals restore or adapt function in their ability to complete daily activities (occupations) that are meaningful to the person. In other words, an OT helps get it done!
